Approach to Full Sanitation
Young Sarpanch of Goat Panchayat believes in development of the village. After realising the importance of toilet and its use, he tried to imbibe this understanding among others in the village. For the purpose, he also constructed toilet in his house along with the other members of the VWSC and Panchayat. Certainly many households got inspired and constructed toilet in their house. However, many HHs (especially BPL) were still not willing to construct the toilet, as it also includes some expenditure from their own pocket.
Thus, to tackle the issue, he, being a Sarpanch, declared that BPL card will be issued only to those BPL households who had constructed/willing to construct toilet in their house. On the other hand, he also assured them that he would mobilise Total Sanitation Campaign fund of Rs. 2,200 meant for BPL families from the department concerned for the construction of toilet. APL families have been given Rs. 1,000 from the Water Aid fund for the similar purpose.
Thus, within two years of the initiation of the WAI project in 2008 all the households of the village got their own toilet. The VWSC members, along with panchayat, have also ensured through regular monitoring that the toilet should be used by all the members of the family.
At the completion of programme, all households, other than SC and OBC households, have constructed toilets in their house. Now the Goat Panchayat has declared itself as Open Defecation Free.
